P
eriodontitis, also called gum disease, is a serious gum infection that damages soft tissue and can destroy the bone that supports your teeth without treatment. Periodontitis can cause loosening of teeth or tooth loss.
Periodontitis is common but can be largely prevented. It is often the result of poor oral hygiene. Brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily, and having regular dental exams can greatly increase your chances of successful treatment for periodontitis.
For regular check-ups, follow the schedule recommended by your dentist. If you notice any signs of periodontitis, make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. The sooner you care, the greater your chances of reversing damage from periodontitis.
Healthy gums are hard and pale pink in color and fit snugly around the teeth. Signs and symptoms of periodontitis can include:
- Swollen or raised gums
- Bright red, dark red, or purplish gums
- Gums that are sensitive to the touch
- Gums that bleed easily
- Pink color toothbrush after brushing
- Coughing up blood while brushing or flossing your teeth
- Bad breath
- Loose teeth and loss of teeth
- Painful chewing
- New spaces that develop between teeth
- Gums that move away from your teeth and make your teeth appear longer than normal
- A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
